It was a beautiful Wednesday summer night- one of those nights where a t-shirt and jeans is absolutely perfect with evening breeze. The sun was golden on the horizon and my dad and I decided to go to I hop for dinner. During the car ride there I turned to dad and proclaimed, ” I have to get chicken and waffles. That’s what I always get and it’s so good, I just have too”. We arrived and started looking through the menu and a burger caught my eye… now what do I get?!? Stress. I went back and forth and heard a little “ask me! Ask me!” Pop into the back of my brain so I said, ” okay Lord, which one should I get?”

” burger.”
“Well, I think I want C&W… you really think I should get a burger?”
“You asked me so I told you.”
“But…”
“….”
Alright. My decision was made.. burger it was. Even though I didn’t even want one anymore at that point. I wanted to listen to the Lord even if this isnt what i wanted.
Then I felt the Lord smile. He said, “You can order whatever food you would like, that was a test. But trust me in the little things, stay intune with my voice and the big decisions won’t be hard to make at all.”

I began to understand. It didn’t matter what food I was ordering, it was that I was taking His advice into consideration. When it came down to it, I ate the entire plate of chicken and waffles and enjoyed every bite, a lot more than if I would have said “whatever” and enjoyed the food of my choice. There isn’t a trick to hearing the Lord, but we do need to practice every day in the little things so that we get used to hearing His voice and are comfortable communicating with him every day. So the next time you have a decision to make, ask the maker himself! He will tell you what to do.
